Graduates of the University of Iowa Department of History have gone on to successful careers both within academia and without, as professors of history, archivists, and public historians, to name but a few. Recent PhDs have obtained academic positions at institutions such as Allegheny College, Bridgewater College, Hampden-Sydney College, Knox College, Mississippi University for Women, SUNY Geneseo, Tulane University, the University of the Free State (South Africa), University of Louisville, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the University of Texas-El Paso, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique).

Other graduates have entered the field of public history, working for the U.S. National Archives, on projects such as the Iowa Labor History Oral Project, or use the skills they acquired during their doctoral studies at non-profit organizations such as United Way.
